Content of web pages has become so convoluted that you cannot expect readers to understand which image is the thumbnail, so now there is a protocol for asking the page how to locate and embed its main content on your blog post.
- oEmbed oEmbed is a format for allowing an embedded representation of a URL on third party sites. The simple API allows a website to display embedded content (such as photos or videos) when a user posts a link to that resource, without having to parse the resource directly.

Open Graph Protocol is a set of metadata attributes you can ad to web pages to make them easily embeddable by FaceBook (and other web sites as well of course, but mainly FaceBook).
